About Our School

Hello, We go to John C. Coonley Elementary School. It was named after John C. Coonley. Our school has about 1,000 students. Coonley offers grades kindergarten-8th grade. After we graduate we go to high school.  We have after school activities such as sports (soccer, football, basketball, volleyball) , cooking, drama club, and so on. 3 years ago our school got a new part of the building, the annex. The addition includes new classes, a multipurpose room and a new lunch room. Our building is 125 years old, and was opened in 1893 but built during the Columbian Expedition. In 1902 Coonley wood structure was replaced by the brick building standing today. The in-school activities include Spanish, art, dance (a new in-school activity), gym, music and drama. The music and drama rooms are where the old lunch room was.

About Our Class 211

Hi, our class is room 211 and we are the options class. Options is where we do accelerated learning. We have thirty kids in our class, most of us are 10 years old. We are one of four classes in the 5th grade at Coonley. We are a very loud class. Our class really likes science taught by Ms. Butala (where were we do science experiments - right now we are exploring five unknown chemicals) and social studies taught by Ms. Grant. Our other subjects are Homeroom and math. Both are taught by Ms. Parsons and ELA (ELA stands for English Language Arts and it is Reading and Writing class) taught by Ms. Butala. Homeroom is the class we go to in the morning for 20 minutes before reading. This is our first year having lockers with combination locks and some people still can’t open them because it just won’t open, or just don’t want to use the locks because it takes too long. Some people decorated their lockers and they look very nice. On people’s birthdays we sometimes decorate their lockers.

Our Social Studies Curriculum

In our Social Studies curriculum, we are learning about early hominids* and how they evolved into modern humans. We also take time to read a book called Refugee, which is about three children who seek refuge in different countries due to persecution and violence in their countries in different time periods. They immigrate to other countries, and during the plot you realize that their stories might be connected. The characters are Josef, a Jewish German who lives in 1939, where he is segregated because of his religion***, Isabel, who lives in Cuba, where she is protesting for her country's rights, and Mahmoud, who is a Muslim in Syria during an ongoing civil war that started with the Arab Spring**. We also use our Social Studies time to share conversation with you! One of our recent projects was that we had to make trading cards for our early hominids unit.
